Bird of Paradise

Rising from a sculpture of green leaves, the bird of paradise bloom unfurls like a living flame. Exotic and elegant, my first encounter with one was in the foliage outside our room at the Del Coronado Hotel. It was 1966 and just moving to San Diego from the midwest the day before, I was smitten. I was mesmerized that this natural work of art was “native” to my new tropical home. I’ve remained enamored by its striking beauty ever since.

 (60 years later, while doing research of the historical hotel, I was shocked to find that my favorite “ visual image” of San Diego was not indigenous to these parts and was introduced to San Diego in 1888 when Kate Sessions, the “Mother of Balboa Park” was hired to create the lush tropical-style courtyards for the new hotel! )
