Seen from above, the moving ocean seems ominous in its depth and energy. Water advances and retreats in a methodical, eternal dialogue with a perspective that is both intimate and expansive, powerful and gentle.
Named in honor of my brother Nick, the work reflects the dual nature that defined who he was. Like the ocean’s tides, he embodied both the precision of an engineer and the creativity of a Renaissance spirit whose analytical mind balanced a deep, artistic and musical soul. Within the painting’s movement, bold, directional energy meets softer, luminous passages, echoing his strength and his empathy.
The composition becomes more than a view of sea and shore. It is a meditation on the complexity of a single life. Order and intuition, strength and tenderness, structure and freedom all converge in sweeping abstract forms where intellect meets imagination. The vastness of the ocean mirrors the depth of human character.
This work was a commissioned piece for a design client of mine. Through the majority of the process I remained on a long distance call with Nick while texting him photos as it progressed in between comments and laughter and support. It is a tribute to a man deeply loved.
